How the conversion works
HMRC doesn't fix one rate for income tax. These are the rules that matter when you turn foreign income into pounds.
Which rate HMRC accepts
There is no single official rate for income tax. Use a reasonable rate and apply it consistently: the rate on the day the income arose, HMRC's monthly rate for that month, or its yearly average. HMRC publishes monthly and average rates mainly for customs and VAT, but they are widely used on Self Assessment returns.
Tax year: 6 April β 5 April
A payment on 1β5 April belongs to the previous tax year, even though it uses April's monthly rate. The converter puts each payment in the right year automatically.
Divide, don't multiply
HMRC quotes rates as units of foreign currency per Β£1. $2,400 at 1.3456 is Β£1,783.59. Multiplying instead is the most common spreadsheet mistake.
Convert foreign tax too
If tax was taken abroad, convert it at the same rate as the income. You need both in pounds to claim Foreign Tax Credit Relief on the foreign pages (SA106).
Deadline: 31 January
The online return for 2025/26 is due by 31 January 2027, and any tax owed must be paid by then too. Paper returns are due by 31 October 2026.
New to the UK? The 4-year FIG regime
Since 6 April 2025, people who become UK resident after 10 consecutive tax years abroad can claim relief on foreign income and gains for their first 4 years. The claim is made on the return, so you still need the amounts in pounds β and for each year you claim you lose the personal allowance and the CGT annual exempt amount.

Frequently asked questions
Which exchange rate should I use for foreign income on my tax return?
HMRC doesn't set one official rate for income tax. Use a reasonable rate and stick to it: the rate on the day the income arose, HMRC's monthly rate for that month, or HMRC's yearly average for income that arrives evenly. If your bank converted the payment, the pounds you actually received are also a reasonable figure.
Can I use the HMRC yearly average rate?
For regular income spread across the year β rent, a foreign salary, monthly client payments β an annual average is generally accepted. It suits one large payment less well, or a year when the currency moved sharply. Whichever method you choose, use it consistently.
Is my bank statement uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and converted in your browser; nothing is sent to our servers or saved. Closing the tab clears everything, so download the CSV before you leave.
Which tax year does a payment on 3 April belong to?
The UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April, so a payment on 3 April 2026 belongs to 2025/26. It is converted at the April 2026 monthly rate because that is the month it arose in.
Where does foreign income go on Self Assessment?
Interest, dividends, pensions and rent from property abroad go on the Foreign pages (SA106), in pounds. Foreign self-employment income goes on the self-employment pages and foreign employment income on the employment pages; tax already paid abroad can be claimed as Foreign Tax Credit Relief.
Why do some payments show βno HMRC rateβ?
HMRC publishes rates one month at a time, so the newest months may not be out yet, and a few currencies aren't covered here. For those payments, use the rate on the day of the payment and add the amount in pounds by hand.
What should I give my accountant?
Download the CSV: every payment with its date, original amount, the HMRC rate and the period used, the amount in pounds and the total for the tax year. That's the working most accountants ask for.
