Can be renewed annually for up to 5 years total. First renewal often 2 years. Subsequent renewals possible if continue meeting requirements (income, remote work, accommodation). Some with strong economic ties may get 3-5 year permits initially.
After 5 consecutive years legal residence under Unique Permit, eligible to apply for permanent residency. Additional requirements: Albanian language proficiency, evidence of integration into society, proof of stable financial situation.
Albanian citizenship possible after minimum 7 years continuous legal residence (some sources say 10 years). Requires permanent residency first, Albanian language skills, integration proof, renunciation of previous citizenship (Albania generally doesn't allow dual citizenship except specific cases).
Tax Treatment
MAJOR BENEFIT: Complete tax exemption for first 12 months from permit issuance, regardless of whether become tax resident (183+ days). Work for foreign employer/clients tax-free in Albania. Unique compared to most digital nomad visas.
If stay beyond first year and remain 183+ days (tax resident), worldwide income becomes subject to Albanian tax at standard rates (0%/13%/23%). Investment income at 15%. Can manage days to avoid tax residency if desired.
Recent legal amendments confirm digital nomads don't create permanent establishment (PE) risk or corporate tax liability for foreign employers. Compliance-friendly for work-from-anywhere programs. Employers don't gain Albanian tax obligations.
Albania has 46 double taxation treaties but not with US (major gap). Professional tax consultation essential to avoid double taxation and navigate home country obligations alongside Albanian tax after first year.
