FAQ

How is income tax calculated in Malta in 2026?

Malta uses a progressive tax system with rates from 0% to 35%. First €12,000 is tax-free. Then 15% on income €12,000-€16,000, 25% on €16,000-€60,000, and 35% above €60,000. However, if you qualify as non-domiciled (non-dom), foreign income is only taxed when brought to Malta (remittance basis). This makes Malta very attractive for expats earning money abroad.

What is Malta's non-dom tax status and who qualifies?

Non-dom status means you're a Malta tax resident but not domiciled there. You pay Malta tax only on Malta-source income and foreign income remitted (brought) to Malta. Foreign income kept abroad is tax-free. You qualify if Malta isn't your permanent home or you don't intend to stay permanently. This status can last indefinitely - no time limit. Must pay minimum €5,000 tax yearly if non-dom. Perfect for remote workers, investors, and business owners.

Do digital nomads pay tax in Malta?

Malta has a Nomad Residence Permit for remote workers earning minimum €3,500/month from non-Malta employers. Valid 1 year, renewable 3 years maximum. Under this permit, you're NOT a tax resident - you pay zero Malta income tax. To become tax resident, you must stay 183+ days and establish your home there. Digital nomads can choose: stay under 183 days (no tax), or become tax resident and claim non-dom status (only taxed on remitted income).

What is the social security rate in Malta 2026?

Employees pay 10% social security contributions deducted from salary. This covers pension, healthcare, unemployment, and maternity benefits. Employers pay additional 10%. Self-employed pay 15% on their income. Maximum weekly contribution ceiling applies - €55.93 per week for employees (about €2,908 a year). Malta has reciprocal social security agreements with EU countries, so you may not need to pay double contributions.

What deductions can I claim in Malta?

Instead of personal allowances, Malta uses separate rate tables: single (0% up to €12,000), married (0% up to €15,500) and parent (0% up to €13,000) rates. Pension contributions and life insurance premiums are deductible. Medical expenses and donations to approved charities can be claimed. Interest on home loans for your main residence is deductible. If self-employed, all business expenses can be deducted: office costs, equipment, travel, professional fees. Keep receipts for everything.

When do I need to file a tax return in Malta?

Filing deadline is June 30 for previous year. If you're an employee with only one job and no other income, your employer handles tax withholding (Final Settlement System) - you might not need to file. Must file if: multiple income sources, self-employed, rental income, capital gains, or claiming deductions. File online through CFR (Commissioner for Revenue) system. Extensions available if you miss deadline.

How does Malta tax cryptocurrency in 2026?

Crypto held long-term as investment: 0% tax on gains. This applies to individuals holding crypto as personal investment, not trading. Day trading crypto: taxed as business income at progressive rates up to 35%. Companies trading crypto pay 35% corporate tax (but can claim refunds reducing to 5%). Crypto mining: taxed as business income. If you're non-dom, crypto gains from foreign exchanges are tax-free if not remitted to Malta. Malta is very crypto-friendly.

Are there tax incentives for businesses in Malta?

Corporate tax is 35%, but shareholders can claim tax refunds making effective rate 5% or 0% in some cases. Highly Qualified Persons (HQP) scheme: 15% flat tax for professionals earning over €75,000. Global Residence Programme: 15% tax on foreign income (minimum €15,000/year). Malta Enterprise offers grants, tax credits for R&D, and incentives for job creation. Gaming, aviation, and shipping industries get special tax rates. EU directives on parent-subsidiary mean no withholding on dividends between EU companies.
