Required income minimum 1,000,000 króna per month (~$7,100 or ~€6,700). One of highest thresholds among digital visas. For couples — 1.4 million króna. Reflects high cost of living.

Employment TypeRemote work

Work for foreign employer or own business outside Iceland. Freelancers with contracts with foreign clients. Cannot work for Icelandic companies.

Visa issued for period from 90 to 180 days. If applying already in Iceland, already spent days in Schengen deducted. Non-renewable in Iceland.

CitizenshipOutside EEA/EFTA

Only for citizens of countries outside European Economic Area and EFTA. EU/EEA citizens can work remotely without visa under free movement rights.

Application Process

DocumentsOnline submission

Fill form, attach passport, photo, income proof (contract/statements), health insurance, accommodation proof. Pay fee 12,200 króna (~$93).

Where to ApplyDirectorate of Immigration

Mail to Directorate of Immigration in Kopavogur or submit in person. Can apply from abroad before arrival or already in Iceland.

Processing TimeSeveral weeks

Processing usually takes 2-4 weeks. After approval, must contact Directorate upon arrival in Iceland for visa issuance. Visa valid from issue date.

FamilyCan get visas

Spouse/partner and children can get family member visas. Children under 18 exempt from standard procedure. Need marriage certificate or proof of cohabitation 1+ year.

Staying less than 183 days doesn't make you tax resident. Don't pay Icelandic tax on foreign income. Only on Icelandic income if any.

Over 183 DaysResident from day one

Staying 183+ days makes you tax resident from arrival date. Pay tax on worldwide income at progressive rates. Double taxation treaties apply.

No KennitalaNo ID number

Remote work visa holders don't receive Icelandic ID number (kennitala). Means limited access to some services. Cannot open bank account without kennitala.

Progressive Tax System
