Residence Permits and Work Options – Bosnia and Herzegovina

EU citizens: 90 days visa-free. US, UK, Canada, Australia, many others: 90 days visa-free. Can enter for tourism, business meetings, exploring. Cannot work formally during this period. Good for 'testing' BiH before committing. Registration required if staying 3+ days (at hotel or police station).

All visitors must register within 3 days of arrival. Hotels register guests automatically. If staying with friends/Airbnb, must register at local police station. Important: can face fines if not registered. Easy process, bring passport and accommodation proof. Different from temporary residence - this is visitor registration only.

Some countries can get visa at border. Others can apply online for e-visa. Usually 30-90 days. Check current BiH Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for your nationality. Tourist/business visa options. Cannot work on tourist visa. Need proper visa type for employment.

BiH company hires you → can apply for temporary residence and work permit. Employer must justify hiring foreigner over local (quota system, skill shortage). More complex than self-employment route. Salary must meet minimum wage (BAM 1,027 net from Jan 2026). Residence tied to specific employment - lose job, may lose residence.

Buying property in BiH can support temporary residence application. Not automatic - must show it's your residence, not just investment. Property prices affordable (Sarajevo apartment €60,000-150,000, provincial cities much less). Can combine with business route. Must prove financial means to support yourself.

Family reunification (married to BiH citizen/resident). Education (enrolled in BiH university). Humanitarian reasons. Retirement (with sufficient pension income). Each has specific requirements and documentation. Application process: apply at Ministry of Interior or local police, provide: passport, proof of grounds (business registration/job contract/etc), accommodation proof, health insurance, financial means, criminal record check. Processing 30-60 days typically.

Can apply after 3 consecutive years of approved temporary residence. Requirements: continuous physical presence, sufficient income, accommodation, basic Bosnian language (basic level, not fluent), integration into society. Permanent residence indefinite duration. Allows: live and work anywhere in BiH, no renewal needed, path to citizenship after 5 more years.

Can apply for citizenship after 8 years legal residence (3 temporary + 5 permanent, or 8 years any combination). Requirements: release from previous citizenship (BiH doesn't allow dual generally, exceptions exist), Bosnian language proficiency, knowledge of history/constitution, financial stability, integration. Long process, interviews, background checks.

Exceptional circumstances: significant investment in BiH economy (job creation, major projects), special skills/services to country, marriage to BiH citizen (after 3 years). No formal 'citizenship by investment' program like Cyprus/Malta. Discretionary, case-by-case. Must demonstrate benefit to BiH.

BiH doesn't recognize dual citizenship except: born with dual citizenship (automatic), citizens of former Yugoslavia states, special presidential exceptions. Acquiring BiH citizenship typically requires renouncing other citizenship. Many avoid naturalizing to keep original passport. Permanent residence sufficient for most purposes.
